Appointed as architect and lead designer, we delivered the new InMotion electronics store at Copenhagen Airport, one of Scandinavia's busiest international gateways. Working from our UK studio with a team of four, we produced the full detailed design in Revit and coordinated closely with an in-country technical architect to ensure all statutory and landlord requirements were satisfied to the correct standard for this high-profile European travel retail location.

Copenhagen Airport is the largest and busiest airport in the Nordic region, serving close to 30 million passengers in 2024 and operating as a major international hub connecting Northern Europe with the rest of the world. Delivering a retail fit-out in this environment demands precision, rigorous coordination, and a thorough understanding of how to operate across international borders with multiple design and statutory stakeholders. That is exactly what we brought to the InMotion electronics store at CPH.

Our team of four led the project from our UK studio, taking the design from concept through to a fully resolved detailed design package. As with all our international projects, the entire scheme was produced in Revit, giving us a coordinated Building Information Model throughout the process. This enabled us to generate detailed 3D realisations of the design for client and landlord sign-off, as well as carrying out thorough clash detection across all building disciplines. Working within a federated model environment alongside structural and MEP designers, we were able to identify and resolve coordination issues in the design stage, well before work began on site.

On international projects of this nature, statutory approvals are the responsibility of an appointed in-country technical architect. Our role was to produce a detailed design of the standard and quality required, then work closely with that technical architect to ensure the correct packages were prepared and submitted to fully satisfy both local building regulations and the airport landlord's fit-out requirements. This process demands clear documentation, tight design discipline, and effective cross-border communication, all of which our studio managed from end to end.

InMotion is WHSmith's specialist airport electronics retail brand, operating over 120 stores with more than 20 years of experience in airport electronics retail WH Smith, carrying leading brands including Apple, Bose, Samsung and Sony. The Copenhagen store sits within one of Europe's most commercially active airport environments, where passenger expectations and landlord standards are both exceptionally high. Delivering a unit that meets the InMotion brand standard while satisfying the requirements of a major international airport landlord is a challenge that calls for both design quality and technical rigour.

We provided both. The result is a store that serves the millions of passengers passing through Copenhagen Airport each year, representing InMotion's continued expansion across European travel retail and our continued delivery of high-quality airport retail design across international locations.
